Breaking away from traditions

Online Marketing is defined as:  "also called internet marketing or online advertising, is any tool, strategy or method of getting the company name out to the public. The advertisements can take many different forms and some strategies focus on subtle messages rather than clear-cut advertisements."

Traditional Marketing is defined as:  "refers to any type of promotion, advertising or campaign that has been in use by companies for years, and that has a proven success rate. Methods of traditional marketing can include print advertisements, such as newsletters, billboards, flyers and newspaper print ads."

So what does this all mean?  Obviously, anything that is invented differs from traditions, because traditions make up our history and what we go back to whenever those new inventions don't succeed. From a marketing stand point, sometimes going back to your roots and taking a different approach on something that has proven worthy in the past is strategic, because all of your competition may be trying to spice it up by inventing new ways to target people, and more times than not, those things fail.

I believe that keeping traditions around are important, especially in marketing, because traditions make us who we are. It is when we start to stray away from our traditions that we see a hiccup in our success, due to it being a new and fresh time for both the company as well as the consumer.

That being said, it is also important to keep people on their toes with new ways to grasp their attention, because if you are not growing then you are simply decaying. I enjoy both types of marketing and think that they are both important in today's world.

  1. I really enjoyed your response about holding on to the traditions. I believe online marketing's foundation came from traditional marketing. With this, I believe both can coincide today and allow marketers to reach consumers like never before.

  2. I liked that you brought up traditions. I think traditional forms of marketing still work, depending upon the audience your going for. A McDonald's billboard works on hungry travelers. However, viral marketing is starting to become traditional. As we are a few years into viral marketing, you see a lot of companies using the same tactics that have worked well for other business. Ads that tell stories often go viral. Budweiser had a video go viral recently to prevent drunk driving, which had a puppy and was very emotional. We saw this repeated the other day in the Avengers commercial, which told a story of a boy and famous athletes becoming Avengers. So these people are borrowing from other companies and becoming more popular techniques.

  3. I enjoyed how you put a personal touch to this post. I also agree that traditions are important. I'm in radio broadcasting, and it gets frustrating hearing that radio is a dying medium. However, I think radio will be around forever, and I also believe this for traditional marketing as well. You said, "If you're not growing, you're decaying." I think that's a great way to put it. Online marketing is a useful tool, and has become what it is based on how society has evolved over time. I think traditions will always be prominent, but it's important to embrace change as well.

  4. I like how you included a definition of both types of marketing in your post. I agree that its important to stick to traditions, especially if it is still working. But like Anna said, viral online marketing is almost becoming a tradition in its self. In the future I think we will see more companies experiment with online marketing until there is a solid business model for it. Until then, we will continue to see both the traditional marketing and the online marketing working together. It will be interesting to see how we handle marketing in the next ten years as technology continues to develop.

  5. I agree with most of this, except for the definition of traditional marketing, since it is the 21st century I would say that radio and television should be put on that list.

  6. I admired your defense for the traditional approaches and strategies of marketing, as they did establish the foundation and fundamentals for online marketing techniques. But just as you said, I believe it is important to keep using creativity to invent and try new methods. I believe the fundamentals of traditional marketing should be considered, but then integrated into the online marketing techniques of today. It is just the most effective in the uprising of the the internet and its unlimited potential to benefit the masses.
