Breaking away from traditions

Online Marketing is defined as:  "also called internet marketing or online advertising, is any tool, strategy or method of getting the company name out to the public. The advertisements can take many different forms and some strategies focus on subtle messages rather than clear-cut advertisements."

Traditional Marketing is defined as:  "refers to any type of promotion, advertising or campaign that has been in use by companies for years, and that has a proven success rate. Methods of traditional marketing can include print advertisements, such as newsletters, billboards, flyers and newspaper print ads."

So what does this all mean?  Obviously, anything that is invented differs from traditions, because traditions make up our history and what we go back to whenever those new inventions don't succeed. From a marketing stand point, sometimes going back to your roots and taking a different approach on something that has proven worthy in the past is strategic, because all of your competition may be trying to spice it up by inventing new ways to target people, and more times than not, those things fail.

I believe that keeping traditions around are important, especially in marketing, because traditions make us who we are. It is when we start to stray away from our traditions that we see a hiccup in our success, due to it being a new and fresh time for both the company as well as the consumer.

That being said, it is also important to keep people on their toes with new ways to grasp their attention, because if you are not growing then you are simply decaying. I enjoy both types of marketing and think that they are both important in today's world.

Talking about Girls

First off, I'd like to preface this post with saying that I enjoy all of Girl Talk's music and have been listening to him for a couple of years now. I had never thought about all of the copyrighting laws that surround his art, but it definitely makes sense as to why he only releases his music online and for free.

I will continue by listing the definitions of two major factors associated with copyright laws:

Fair Use: "(in US copyright law) the doctrine that brief excerpts of copyright material may, under certain circumstances, be quoted verbatim for purposes such as criticism, news reporting, teaching, and research, without the need for permission from or payment to the copyright holder."

Transformative Use: "focuses on whether the new work merely supersedes the objects of the original creation, or whether and to what extent it is “transformative,” altering the original with new expression, meaning, or message."

In my opinion, "Girl Talk" is totally within his rights as an artist to transform these 10 second samples into his own songs, due to his goal not being to supersede the original creation. Due to his mixtapes being released online, such as the latest one entitled "All Day", he is not receiving royalties for these songs and has now paved the way for all other DJ's who want to do the same. I believe he is a true musician who puts more thought into his work than many other DJ's who are out trying to do the same thing.
